Dufuna Canoe: How African's Oldest Canoe Was Discovered In Yobe State, Nigeria

On 4 May 1987, Mallam Ya'u, a Fulani cattle herder in Dufuna village along the Komadugu Gana River in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, struck a hard object while digging a well at 4.5 metres below the surface. What he had found would rewrite West African civilisational history. The object was a dugout canoe, 8.4 metres long, 50 centimetres wide, and 5 centimetres thick, carved from a single African mahogany log with stone adzes whose tool marks are still visible on the wood surface. Formally excavated in 1994 by a joint team from the University of Frankfurt and the University of Maiduguri under Professors Peter Breunig and Garba Abubakar, radiocarbon dating by two independent German laboratories placed the canoe at between 8,500 and 8,000 years old, approximately 6,000 to 6,500 BC. This makes the Dufuna canoe the oldest known boat in Africa and one of the oldest surviving watercraft on earth, older than the Egyptian pyramids by more than three thousand years, and older than Stonehenge by comparable margin.

To understand where the Dufuna canoe sits in global maritime history requires a precise comparison with the handful of other ancient watercraft that have survived in archaeologically recoverable condition. The oldest known boat on earth is the Pesse canoe, discovered in 1955 during the construction of the A28 motorway near the village of Pesse in the Dutch province of Drenthe. A farmer named Hendrik Wanders noticed unusual tool marks on what workers had dismissed as a rotting log and brought it for inspection to the University of Groningen. Radiocarbon dating established its construction between 8,040 BC and 7,510 BC, making it approximately 10,000 years old. The Pesse canoe is carved from a Scots pine log, measures 298 centimetres in length and 44 centimetres in width, and is currently preserved at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, where it was freeze-dried to prevent further decomposition.

The comparison between the Pesse and Dufuna canoes is instructive and the results are unambiguous on one critical dimension. The Pesse canoe is older by approximately 1,500 to 2,000 years. However, the Pesse canoe is 298 centimetres long. The Dufuna canoe is 840 centimetres long, nearly three times the length of its Dutch counterpart. Where the Pesse canoe is a modest personal vessel suited for one or two occupants navigating marshes and streams, the Dufuna canoe is a substantial craft requiring coordinated labour to construct and capable of carrying meaningful cargo or multiple people across open water. The Pesse canoe was built at roughly the same historical moment as people in the Yobe region were already operating boats considerably more ambitious in scale and structural complexity. The gap in technological sophistication is not in Europe's favour.

A French canoe discovered in 1992 in the Rhône valley, the Noyen-sur-Seine dugout, dates to approximately the same period as the Dufuna canoe. The Lurgan Canoe from Ireland, recovered from a bog in County Galway, dates considerably later, to approximately 2,500 BC. Wisconsin lake beds in North America have yielded dugout canoes dated to around 4,500 years ago. The Dufuna canoe predates all North American and most European examples by several thousand years, and is exceeded in age only by the Pesse canoe and possibly one or two other Mesolithic European fragments whose canoe status remains contested among specialists.

Green Sahara: The Road That Disappeared

The civilisational significance of the Dufuna canoe cannot be read in isolation from the climatic conditions that made it possible and that the canoe itself helps to confirm. At the time of the canoe's construction, approximately 6,000 BC, the Sahara was not a desert. It was a landscape of grasslands, forests, rivers, and lakes covering millions of square kilometres of what is today the most inhospitable terrain on earth. This period, documented extensively in palaeoclimatology as the African Humid Period, lasted from approximately 14,500 years ago to around 5,000 years ago, driven by Milankovitch cycles, the periodic variations in Earth's orbital parameters that intensified Northern Hemisphere summer solar radiation and pushed the African monsoon hundreds of miles further north than it reaches today.

During the African Humid Period, the Lake Chad basin did not contain a modest freshwater lake fluctuating between 2,000 and 5,000 square kilometres as it does today. It contained Mega-Chad, an inland sea of approximately 400,000 square kilometres, larger than the modern Caspian Sea, connected to an elaborate network of rivers, wetlands, and lakes stretching from the Sahel zone northward into what is now Libya and Sudan. The village of Dufuna, located approximately 200 kilometres from the present shore of Lake Chad, would have sat within or immediately adjacent to this vast inland water system. The Komadugu Gana River, beside which the canoe was buried, was not a minor seasonal watercourse but part of a connected hydrological system feeding into Mega-Chad and linking the Lake Chad basin to broader trans-Saharan water networks.

This is the geographical and climatic context in which the makers of the Dufuna canoe lived. They were not inhabitants of a marginal semi-arid zone. They were lakeside people, wetland people, water people, operating an 8.4 metre craft on what amounted to an African inland sea. The sophistication of their canoe, its length, its carefully controlled wall thickness of 5 centimetres, its finished surface rubbed with animal fat to prevent cracking, is consistent with a boat-building tradition that had been refined over many generations before the particular vessel Mallam Ya'u found was made and used.

The question of whether the African Humid Period made early migration easy and seamless deserves a direct and evidenced answer. It did, and the mechanism is now understood in considerable detail. During the humid period, the rivers and lakes of the Green Sahara functioned as migration corridors, allowing both animal populations and human communities to move across what is today an impassable barrier. Palaeoclimate researchers working with lake sediments, marine core samples from the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and satellite radar imaging of buried river channels beneath the Saharan sand surface have reconstructed a trans-Saharan river network that during peak humid conditions connected the Niger River system to the Mediterranean through a series of lakes and river channels whose dried beds are still visible under the desert through radar penetration imaging.

Research published in 2025, in which scientists recovered ancient DNA from individuals who lived during the Green Sahara approximately 7,000 years ago, revealed a long-isolated North African lineage consistent with population movement across the then-green Sahara during this period. The genetic evidence confirms what the geography had already suggested: the African Humid Period was not merely a pleasant climatic anomaly. It was a population movement event, a period during which communities that had been genetically and culturally separated by desert barriers came into contact, exchanged technology, language, and genes, and dispersed new combinations of all three across a continent and beyond.

The Dufuna canoe fits precisely into this picture. A boat-building people operating on the Mega-Chad inland sea system at 6,000 BC, during the final phase of the African Humid Period, would have had water access northward into what is now Libya, eastward toward the Nile valley, and southward into the Niger basin. The canoe was not simply a fishing tool. It was a vehicle for connection across a water system whose scale the present desert has entirely erased from visual memory. When the humid period ended, when the monsoon retreated and the Sahara dried with relative geological swiftness between 5,000 and 4,000 years ago, these water highways closed permanently. The communities that had been connected by water became separated by sand. What they had built, traded, communicated, and shared across that inland sea system was suddenly stranded in the historical record without the physical geography that had made it coherent.

What the Canoe Proves Beyond Maritime Technology 

The Dufuna canoe's construction required a level of technical specialisation that was not casual or occasional. Documentation from the 1994 excavation notes that working mahogany to a consistent 5 centimetre wall thickness across an 8.4 metre hull length using only stone adze tools, without metal, without measuring instruments beyond the craftsman's calibrated eye and physical experience, represented a mastery of material, tool, and form that implies a dedicated boat-building tradition spanning multiple generations. You do not produce a canoe of that quality the first time a community decides to try. You produce it after decades of accumulated practice, failure, refinement, and transmitted knowledge.

This means the Dufuna canoe, buried at 6,000 BC, is evidence not of the beginning of boat-building in the Lake Chad basin but of its maturity. The tradition that produced it was already established. Earlier boats were made in the same region. They have simply not yet been found, largely because no systematic archaeological survey of the broader Komadugu Gana River basin has been conducted with the resources and methodology that the question demands.

Three Policies Suggestions 

1. The National Commission for Museums and Monuments, in direct partnership with the Yobe State Government, must fund the construction of a purpose-built, climate-controlled research and display facility for the Dufuna canoe in Damaturu, designed to international museum conservation standards, with an attached research centre hosting resident archaeologists and palaeoclimatologists. The canoe's current storage conditions, repeatedly disrupted by the security situation in the northeast, represent an unacceptable conservation risk for an artefact of global significance. Nigeria cannot continue to house one of the world's oldest surviving watercraft in conditions that would be considered inadequate for a regional ethnographic collection.

2. The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology must commission a systematic archaeological survey of the Komadugu Gana River basin and the broader Mega-Chad shoreline zone within Nigerian territory, using ground-penetrating radar technology and coring methodology proven in comparable Saharan basin surveys, to search for additional submerged or buried watercraft and settlement remains from the African Humid Period. The 1994 excavation was a response to a chance find. Nigeria has never conducted proactive systematic investigation of what else the Mega-Chad sediment record contains. Given that the Dufuna canoe was found at 4.5 metres depth by a man digging a well, the probability that other recoverable artefacts remain in the same sediment column is not speculative. It is high.

3. The African Union Commission on Science, Research and Innovation must establish a formal Green Sahara Heritage Initiative, bringing together the seven nations that share the former Mega-Chad basin, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Sudan, Libya, and Algeria, to coordinate the archaeological and palaeoclimatological investigation of the African Humid Period and its civilisational legacy across the region. The water highway that once connected these nations' territories has been dry for five thousand years. The political and academic infrastructure to investigate it together has never been built. The Dufuna canoe is the most visible surviving artefact of a civilisational moment that all seven nations share. Its story belongs to all of them and should be investigated by all of them together.

Eight thousand years ago, a craftsman in what is now Yobe State carved a mahogany hull with stone tools and launched it onto an inland sea the size of France. The Sahara was his highway. The world has spent five thousand years forgetting he existed. The canoe he left in the mud is still here. The forgetting is what needs to end.
