Editorial Policy
At VendTop Media, we believe that history, culture and information deserve to be presented with accuracy, fairness and intellectual honesty. Our mission is to document, explore and explain African history, Nigerian heritage, indigenous knowledge, cultural identities and important social developments. We aim to provide readers with informative, engaging and well researched content that encourages curiosity, understanding and meaningful discussions.
This Editorial Policy explains the principles and standards that guide our publishing activities.
1. Our Editorial Mission
VendTop Media is an independent digital publication committed to exploring African history, culture, civilisation, heritage and society.
We seek to:
- Document historical events, traditions and cultural practices.
- Explore the origins and development of African communities and kingdoms.
- Present historical debates and competing interpretations fairly.
- Highlight archaeological discoveries and scholarly research.
- Promote informed discussions about African identity, heritage and civilisation.
- Make historical and cultural information accessible to a wider audience.
We believe African history deserves serious research, responsible interpretation and meaningful representation.
2. Originality and Content Creation
We are committed to publishing original articles, research-based features, historical explanations and editorial commentary. Our content is developed through research, analysis and independent writing.
When information is obtained from other publications, academic research, books, archival materials or credible online sources, we seek to acknowledge those sources appropriately. We do not consider simple copying, superficial rewriting or the reproduction of another publisher's work to be acceptable substitutes for original editorial contributions. Where appropriate, our articles provide additional context, comparisons, explanations and independent perspectives that help readers understand the subject more deeply.
3. Research and Fack-Checking
Historical and cultural information can sometimes be disputed, incomplete or interpreted differently by different communities and researchers. For this reason, we make reasonable efforts to examine the reliability of information before publication.
Our research may draw upon:
- Academic books and peer-reviewed journals.
- Historical documents and archival records.
- Archaeological reports and discoveries.
- Published ethnographic research.
- Oral traditions and community histories.
- Reputable news organisations and institutional publications.
- Credible interviews and expert contributions.
We recognise that not every historical question has a universally accepted answer. Where evidence is incomplete or interpretations differ, we aim to communicate those uncertainties rather than present speculation as established fact.
4. Treatment of Oral Traditions and Indigenous Knowledge
Oral traditions are important sources of African historical and cultural knowledge. At VendTop Media, we recognise the importance of community memories, genealogies, ancestral accounts, traditional institutions and indigenous knowledge systems.
However, we also recognise that oral accounts can differ between communities, families, generations and historical interpreters. When discussing competing traditions, we aim to:
- Identify different versions of an account where possible.
- Distinguish oral narratives from independently established historical evidence.
- Avoid presenting disputed traditions as universally accepted facts.
- Treat cultural identities and community histories with respect.
- Provide historical context when discussing disagreements.
Our objective is not to impose one interpretation on every community but to encourage informed understanding of Africa's diverse historical experiences.
5. Accuracy, Fairness and Balance
We strive to ensure that our articles are accurate, balanced and presented in appropriate historical and cultural contexts. We do not deliberately distort historical information to promote ethnic superiority, prejudice, political interests or misleading narratives.
Where historical interpretations conflict, we aim to represent significant viewpoints fairly and explain the available evidence. We also avoid presenting unsupported claims, fabricated quotations, invented historical references or misleading statistics as established information.
6. Use of Sources and References
We value credible sources and responsible attribution. Where appropriate, articles may include references to books, academic publications, research papers, historical records, interviews and other relevant materials. We aim to identify sources clearly enough for interested readers to investigate the information further.
We respect copyright and intellectual property rights. We do not claim ownership of third-party material, photographs, illustrations or other copyrighted works that do not belong to us. Where third-party material is used, we seek appropriate permission or rely on a lawful basis for its use, with attribution where appropriate.
7. Artificial Intelligence and Editorial Responsibility
VendTop Media recognises that artificial intelligence tools can assist with research organisation, language editing, brainstorming and other publishing tasks.
However, the use of such tools does not replace the responsibility to ensure that published information is accurate, original and useful. AI-assisted material must be reviewed and fact-checked before publication. We do not consider automatically generated content, unverified claims or superficial machine-produced rewriting to be sufficient substitutes for meaningful editorial work.
Final editorial responsibility rests with the publisher or responsible editor.
8. Headlines, Images and Presentation
We aim to use headlines that accurately represent the subject and contents of our articles. Although engaging headlines are important, we do not intentionally use misleading headlines or exaggerated claims that misrepresent the evidence.
Images, illustrations and captions should be relevant to the subject being discussed. Where historical photographs or illustrations are unavailable, illustrative images should not be presented in a way that falsely suggests they are authentic historical records. We aim to respect the dignity, privacy and cultural sensitivities of individuals and communities represented in our publications.
9. Corrections and Updates
We recognise that historical research develops and that published information may occasionally contain errors or require additional context. When a factual error is identified and verified, we will make reasonable efforts to correct it. Significant corrections may be reflected in the article, with an explanatory note where appropriate.
Articles may also be updated when new research, reliable evidence or important historical context becomes available. Readers who identify possible inaccuracies are encouraged to contact us.
10. Editorial Independence
VendTop Media aims to maintain editorial independence in its publishing decisions. Our editorial content should not be improperly influenced by advertisers, commercial interests, political organisations, ethnic pressure groups or other external parties.
Where sponsored content, advertising or commercial partnerships are published, we aim to distinguish them clearly from independent editorial material. Our commitment is to our readers and to the responsible presentation of information.
11. Reader Participation and Feedback
We value constructive criticism, corrections, additional historical information and informed contributions from our readers.
Readers are welcome to share relevant knowledge, suggest historical topics and identify areas where additional research may be necessary. However, reader contributions and comments may be moderated to discourage harassment, hate speech, personal attacks, spam and deliberately misleading information. We encourage respectful discussions, especially on subjects involving historical disagreements and cultural identity.
12. Our Commitment to Continuous Improvement
Editorial standards are not static.
As VendTop Media grows, we intend to strengthen our research practices, improve source documentation, expand historical coverage and continually improve the quality of our publications.
We believe that responsible African historical journalism requires curiosity, patience, accuracy and a willingness to reconsider conclusions when stronger evidence becomes available. Our readers deserve information that is not only interesting but also credible and meaningful.
VendTop Media is committed to documenting Africa's past, examining its present and preserving knowledge for future generations.
